DUNDEE IS TOP OF THE CLASS FOR STUDENTS
30 August 2016
DUNDEE’S reputation as a vibrant centre of further education has been underlined by a recent bank report.
Universities and colleges have long lured students from across Scotland and much further afield, with the student population enjoying a warm welcome and playing a key role in the vitality of life in the City of Discovery.
A Royal Bank of Scotland survey can only enhance the city’s reputation as being student friendly.
Not only did Dundee feature in the UK’s top 10 “financially friendly student cities,” but the report hailed it as the cheapest student city in Scotland, with the average weekly rental coming in at £94.49, with the UK average £109. Edinburgh was the most expensive, with rentals averaging £112.
The index surveyed 2,500 students to pinpoint the most - and least - affordable places to study.
The survey took into account a wide range of factors, including living and accommodation costs and average student incomes, from part-time jobs, student loans and parental support.
It also looked at how much students spend on going out and how much time they spend studying.
Tayside Solicitors Property Centre manager Lynne Hill said: “Dundee has always appreciated its student population.
“And in terms of the property market, student tenants play a key role in the buy-to-let sector and with study terms of three to four years we also see a regular turnover in the flats sector.
“The vibrant West End is always popular with students and also staff at Ninewells Hospital, while the city centre also appeals to students at Abertay University.”
Dundee University Students’ Association spokesman Andrew Stewart said: “We are delighted with the low cost of living, the best students’ association in Scotland and the huge number of opportunities on offer for students both on and off campus. Dundee is a great student city to come and study in.”
